Chlorella
Although many natural doctors agree on the genral cleansing power of chlorella very few people agree on the best way to produce and prepare chlorella. There are two main types of chlorella: vulgaris and pyrenoidosa. Vulgaris is more digestible (and more nutritious) while pyrenoidosa has better detoxifying qualities. It appears that the best-quality chlorella is grown outdoors in either Taiwan or Japan; chlorella from Germany (and grown in a sun-exposed tube, as opposed to an outdoor tank) may also be good. Chlorella from China is to be avoided. Chlorella treated by either Pressure Release or Sound Vibration is preferable to "cracked-wall" chlorella because when the cell-wall is cracked open and the cell is pulverized it exposes the contents to rapid oxygenation and rancidity. (If you are able to crack open your own chlorella, through a special mill, right before eating, this would avoid the rancidity issue.) There is also a soft-shelled type of chlorella, called cyptomonadales, which appears to be highly digestible without having to crack open the cell wall. (The manufacturer's, who sell this type of chlorella under the name of "Crypto Power" claim that it has a 95% absorption rate. This form of chlorella is a lot more expensive than the other two forms.)
As you can see, the action of chlorella is two-fold: providing essential nutrients and also cleaning up toxins.
